The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 203

Catherine kept her head down, biting the inside of her lip. Her thoughts spun in circles, but nothing came out. She had no idea what to say to Lance.

“Lance, I was just talking. There’s really nothing more to it. Nothing dramatic or secret going on. You know how it is—nothing lasts forever. Catherine’s still young, she can’t spend her whole life working at SilverLeaf Industries,” Michelle chimed in, trying to smooth things over.

Lance didn’t even acknowledge Michelle. His sharp gaze stayed fixed on Catherine.

Catherine took a slow breath, forced herself to look up, and managed a weak smile, following Michelle’s lead. “Yeah, exactly. Even marriages don’t last forever. It’s just a job.”

She tried to sound nonchalant, but there was no hiding the sadness in her eyes. To Lance, it looked more like annoyance. Maybe she was tired of their two-year marriage. Maybe she was tired of the job. Either way, he was the thing tying it all together.

Lance’s jaw tightened. His eyes grew cold and intense. “Fine. Next time you want to quit, Catherine, the company won’t try to stop you.”

He turned and left.

Aaron sighed and hurried after him. “Guess we’re skipping lunch again…”

The moment Lance walked into the cafeteria, everything had gone quiet. As soon as he left, the room buzzed back to life. People huddled in little groups, sneaking glances at Catherine.

She sat down and stared at her food. She’d been starving just a minute ago, but suddenly, she couldn’t even think about eating.

“I’m sorry,” Michelle said, sinking into the seat beside her. “I didn’t think Lance would show up in the cafeteria. I really didn’t mean to get you involved in all that.”

“It’s okay.” Catherine forced a smile. “Let’s just eat.”

She had to eat, for the baby if nothing else, even if her appetite had vanished.

“These people are relentless,” Michelle muttered, noticing how everyone was whispering about what just happened. She looked even more guilty. “Really, Catherine, I’m sorry.”

Catherine patted her hand. “It’s fine. Just eat before it gets cold.”

“I’ll let Lewis know,” Michelle added quietly. She had been thinking about playing matchmaker, but after today she didn’t have the heart.
