Lance went quiet for a few seconds, his voice dropping low. “Compared to me?”
He could cook, too. He didn’t do it often, but Catherine remembered every time.
“Of course, Lance, no one compares to you.” She flashed a polite smile, but her words made it pretty clear who mattered more to her. Between Lance and Lewis, there was no contest.
A flicker of annoyance crossed Lance’s face.
The elevator stopped on the seventeenth floor. Catherine stepped out first, the insulated container in her hand practically shouting for attention.
The doors slid shut and Lance’s brow knitted, his dark eyes clouded with something he couldn’t quite hide.
Catherine had used the excuse of returning the container to meet up with Lewis.
See you at the reception tonight. That was all she messaged.
Lewis was going to the event with Adolf anyway.
By three in the afternoon, Catherine was pulling up outside the Green family’s place to pick up Adelina.
Adelina looked perfect in a pale green dress and subtle makeup, carrying herself with all the poise of someone raised in privilege.
Catherine had chosen a loose black dress, not the clingy kind she’d worn before. It covered her bump perfectly.
Adelina, knowing about her pregnancy, couldn’t help but steal a couple of glances at her stomach. She really was hiding it. If you didn’t already know, you’d never guess.
Catherine waited by the car door.
Once Adelina was done sizing her up, she got in. Catherine shut the door, slipped behind the wheel, and drove straight to the hotel.
“Why didn’t Lance come get me?” Adelina asked as soon as she settled in.
“He has an international conference,” Catherine answered honestly.
“Then why are you picking me up?” Adelina’s tone was sharp. She clearly didn’t want Catherine around.
“Aaron took the day off,” Catherine replied.
Adelina didn’t say anything else.
An hour later, they arrived at the hotel. The reception was on the third floor.
Catherine parked in the underground lot and headed up with Adelina.
