The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 456

“If you ever get stuck, just call me, even if it’s the middle of the night.”

Catherine gave her shoulder a reassuring pat and glanced toward Lance’s office. The door was shut tight, blocking out everything, like it belonged to some other world.

“Alright, I’m heading out,” she said.

Letty looked like she was about to cry, her eyes suddenly watery for reasons Catherine could only guess.

Catherine didn’t hesitate—she left quickly, worried that if Letty burst into tears, it might mess up her whole day at work.

Letty was about to walk Catherine to the lobby when the phone on her desk lit up. Lance’s deep, smooth voice came through the speaker. “Come in.”

Come in. Step inside. Catherine, come here. Words she’d heard so many times before.

That strange mix of familiarity and distance washed over her. Catherine paused at the elevator, her hand hovering over the button.

“Oh, Catherine!” Letty called after her, torn between walking her out or going to Lance. “Wait for me, I’ll be right back!”

Catherine glanced back in time to see Letty rushing into Lance’s office. The door opened, then closed. For a split second, sunlight caught on Lance’s silhouette, throwing it against the wall. Then it was gone.

Catherine looked away, stepped into the elevator, and left.

She hadn’t told Lorinda about quitting yet.

When she got home, Catherine walked in and set a resignation agreement right in front of Lorinda.

Lorinda was busy cuddling Jasper, showering him with kisses, when the paperwork landed on the table. She barely glanced at it. “What’s this? Read it to me.”

“My resignation. It’s official. Here—my signature and Lance’s are both on the last page.”

Catherine flipped to the final page, staring at Lance’s signature for a moment.

“Wait, what the hell?” Lorinda put Jasper down and snatched the agreement, flipping through it in disbelief. Her voice went up a notch. “Are you serious?”
