The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 46

No matter what she said, Lance didn’t respond. The rest of the drive to the James Estate was silent.

When they arrived, Lance got out and walked straight toward the mansion.

Belinda watched him go, muttering under her breath, “As if you can really ignore Adelina.” She pulled out her phone and called Sarah. “The engagement party’s in ten days. Lance is swamped, so we’ll handle everything…”

Catherine couldn’t stop thinking about quitting. The whole night, she tossed and turned, dreaming that she was trying to leave but couldn’t move. Then suddenly, she was in Harrisburg with Lorinda, as if everything had already happened.

Her alarm went off twice before she finally heard it. She rushed through her morning routine, barely making it to the office in time to clock in at 8:59. Carrying two hard-boiled eggs, she made her way to her desk.

Shirley was already there, spinning around in Catherine’s chair with a look of smug satisfaction.

Catherine set her eggs on the desk, looking down at her. “Oh, Catherine, you’re here,” Shirley said, her face flickering with a hint of discomfort. She stopped spinning but didn’t bother to get up.

“It’s already nine. The rules say you’re supposed to clock in at least five minutes early. Looks like you’re late,” Shirley announced, acting like she owned the place.

Catherine almost laughed at her tone. “So?”

Shirley was still an intern, barely hanging on in the department, yet here she was trying to boss Catherine around. It was almost funny—like watching someone try way too hard to impress.

That little laugh from Catherine made Shirley’s fake confidence crumble.

“And you brought breakfast to your desk. Catherine, you work for Lance. Shouldn’t you be setting an example?”

“You’re right. I work for Lance,” Catherine said, cutting her off.

Shirley was instantly lost for words. Catherine put her bag on the desk, raising her eyebrow as if to say, get up.
