Catherine froze when she heard Lance’s voice, a shiver crawling up her spine. Instinctively, she tried to stash the document away, but before she could, Shirley spoke up, making Lance pause.
He looked straight at Shirley, noticing she was standing where Catherine usually did. Catherine turned, catching Lance’s sharp gaze. She opened her mouth to say something, but Shirley jumped in first.
“Lance, Catherine’s about to start her resignation paperwork. I’ll be taking over her duties, and I’ll prep for the meeting later.”
Shirley didn’t even give Catherine a chance to explain. As soon as the words left Shirley’s mouth, Catherine felt her breath hitch. In her head, all she could think was, This is bad.
“Who’s resigning?” Lance’s eyes narrowed.
“Catherine,” Shirley replied quickly. “After she signs, she can leave right away.”
Lance’s eyes dropped to the termination agreement, right where Catherine had just started to sign her name. His expression chilled, the air around him turning cold and tense.
When he saw his own signature on the document, his gaze sharpened, landing on Catherine with the force of a blade. Catherine’s brows drew together. Aside from the embarrassment of being caught, she didn’t seem panicked at all.
Shirley, though, was another story. It suddenly hit her that yesterday, when Lance signed the paper, he thought it was for her leave of absence. He had no idea Catherine was actually resigning.
Her face drained of color as she rushed to explain. “Lance, Adelina told me to do this!”
“In my office.” Lance’s voice was clipped. He turned and walked in without another word.
Catherine bit her lip, quickly finished signing her name, then followed him. Shirley hurried in after her.
Inside, Lance said nothing. The tension made it hard to breathe.
