Lance had a dinner meeting that night. Around five, he left the office with Adelina, car keys swinging from his fingers.
“Push tonight’s meeting back half an hour. We’ll start when I get back,” he told Catherine.
Catherine stood up, nodding like she was on autopilot. “Got it, Lance.”
Adelina gave Lance her purse, her tone playful. “You go ahead. I want to chat with Catherine for a minute.”
“I’ll meet you downstairs, okay?”
Lance checked his watch. “If you have something to say, say it now.”
“Oh, come on. I can’t say it in front of you. Just go. It’s not like I’m going to bully her or anything.”
Adelina shooed him toward the elevator.
Lance’s brow was tense, but he looked resigned. Right before the elevator doors closed, he glanced back at Catherine. That look was a warning, telling her to watch her words.
He had no idea that the second he was gone, Adelina’s whole vibe would change.
She marched over to Catherine’s desk, chin lifted. “Lance is only keeping you around to mess with me after our fight. That’s all this is.”
A dull ache settled in Catherine’s chest. It hit her, maybe for the first time, that this was exactly the kind of person Lance was.
He hated being told what to do. The more Adelina tried to get rid of Catherine, the more he’d double down and keep her around, just to prove he couldn’t be controlled.
“Catherine, you’re smart. If you get a chance to leave, take it and don’t look back. If things get ugly… trust me, Lance would never let me get hurt.”
Adelina had spent all afternoon in the office, probably replaying Catherine’s comment about how leaving for Golden Horizon Enterprises could ruin her career. But Adelina didn’t care about that. She just wanted to pressure Catherine into going with Gavin, so she threw out the threat and left.
Catherine sat back down, getting ready for the meeting.
