“Latonia.”
Catherine knew a little about the Lee family, so she told Lorinda what she remembered. “She’s married to Geoffrey’s brother and the two of them do a lot of charity work. They have a son who’s maybe ten or so. I heard they had a daughter… but she passed away really young.”
Lorinda sat down beside her. “From what you’re telling me, that couple sounds pretty decent. But what about Geoffrey’s own family… are they not so great?”
Catherine nodded, a small smile on her lips. “Yeah, honestly, that’s what people say about Davis and Geoffrey, at least around Eldervale’s upper circles.” They both understood the rest. Some things didn’t need to be spelled out.
“If you really are part of the Davis family, I think you’ll be really happy,” Catherine added, a little softer.
Lorinda fiddled with the strand of hair she was holding and after a moment, got up. “I’m going to go call Harrell, see if he can help.”
“Go on.”
Catherine watched Lorinda head back to her room to make the call. A few minutes later, Lorinda reemerged wearing a fresh outfit.
“I’m going to drop off the hair with Harrell,” Lorinda said as she tugged on her shoes in the entryway and grabbed her bag. “If Alexa comes home, can you let her know? I’ll try to be back before noon.”
Catherine stood up to walk her out. “Take care, okay? No need to rush.”
Lorinda seemed a lot calmer than Catherine had expected, actually calmer than she felt herself. Maybe she just didn’t believe she was Latonia’s daughter, or maybe she was so overwhelmed she hadn’t really processed any of it yet.
“I’m heading out.” Lorinda pulled open the door, paused, then swung back around and hugged Catherine tight.
Catherine was caught off guard but hugged her back, patting her shoulder. “See? I knew you were just acting calm. Inside, you’re freaking out, huh?”
Latonia had already done the research. It was almost certain Lorinda was the Davis family’s daughter. But Lorinda still needed proof, something official, to really accept the idea that she’d suddenly found her biological parents.
“Yeah, I’m losing it,” Lorinda admitted, pulling away, her eyes already red from tears. “Catherine, whatever happens, whoever I turn out to be, we’re still us. That’ll never change.”
“Lorinda, do you know something you’re not telling me?”
