The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 522

“So you’re saying someone was trying to drive a wedge between us?” Lorinda interrupted her, frowning. “Then spill it. Who told you I was dead? Why would they make up something like that? What were they trying to get out of it?”

Latonia was so caught up in her emotions, she could barely pull herself together. Lorinda’s suspicion stung, cutting right through her, but she could see where it was coming from. Suddenly showing up and claiming to be her daughter’s mother just seemed too wild, too sudden.

She took a deep breath to settle herself, gave Catherine a quick glance and her gaze cooled even more.

“This was all because of some mess inside the Lee family. For generations, the family inheritance always went to the daughters, never the sons. When it came down to your father’s generation, there were two brothers. Your dad didn’t care about the money, but Geoffrey had his eyes on it. Whoever had a daughter first basically won it all. Only Geoffrey only cared about having sons… I haven’t figured out exactly what went down back then, but the details aren’t important. What matters is you’re alive, and we finally found you.”

Catherine frowned a little. Deep down, she had a feeling Latonia was telling the truth.

Lorinda really did have a mother who cared.

But somewhere inside, Catherine couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen.

“Alright, let’s just get a DNA test. If it turns out we're really related, if you are actually my mom, then I’ll believe what you’re telling me,” Lorinda said, pulling two hairs from her own head. “Let’s do it.”

Latonia felt another wave of sadness at how cold Lorinda was being toward her, but she got it. She calmly pulled out two of her own hairs and handed them over.

“Okay.”

Lorinda quickly tucked the hairs away and stood up, ready to end the conversation. “You should go now.”

Latonia looked like she wanted to say something, but Lorinda was already heading for the door.

With no choice, Latonia grabbed her bag and got up. Passing by Catherine, she paused. Her eyes were icy, full of complicated feelings. That one look made Catherine feel a dull ache in her chest, like a tiny splinter stuck right where she couldn’t reach.
