“Of course I need you,” Catherine nodded. “That is, if you’re willing to stay. And we’ll probably have to move.”
“I’d love to stay!” Alexa replied, earnest as ever. “Lanny’s such a sweet kid, and you’re a wonderful person. I’d be hard-pressed to find a better employer. But Catherine, it’s not just about Lanny. You have to be careful for your own sake too. You can’t let something like this happen again!”
Catherine’s heart softened. “Thank you for saying that. It won’t happen again—I promise.”
She reassured herself that Lanny’s origins were finally secure. Lance still didn’t know and wouldn’t dig any deeper. Marrying him again was a gamble, but at least the Lee family's looming threat would be dealt with first.
“So, where are we going? And where did Lorinda run off to, anyway?” Alexa blurted. “Did she find somewhere new for you?”
Lorinda’s name sent a pang of regret through Catherine. In just a single day, everything had been turned upside down. She never imagined that after her divorce from Lance, their paths would become entwined again—much less that she’d end up remarrying him. Nor had she ever thought things with Lorinda would reach this point.
“No, it’s not that. We’re moving somewhere else.”
Seeing the shadow flit across Catherine’s face, Alexa quickly changed her tone. “Wherever you go, I’ll go. My only job is to look after Lanny.”
Before long, Lanny had drifted off to sleep. When Catherine stepped out of the room, Aaron was already waiting. Two copies of the remarriage agreement and a pen lay on the coffee table.
Catherine sat down, reaching for one of the agreements to skim through.
Lance’s voice broke the silence. “Do you really not trust me?”
“It’s not that,” Catherine replied, shaking her head. She flipped straight to the last page. Lance’s signature sprawled boldly across the bottom—confident and forceful. She signed her name beneath his without hesitation. She’d written the terms herself; Lance hadn’t contested a thing. There was nothing about her that he wanted—nothing to haggle over.
