“Do the Lees actually want to claim her as one of their own?”
A cold feeling crept into Adelina’s heart.
Belinda had always looked down on Catherine, all because of her background, nothing more. If Catherine really turned out to be the Lee family heiress, someone with actual influence—then suddenly, Adelina's only advantage would vanish.
“I—” Sally started, then let out a frustrated sigh and pressed a hand to her stomach. “It’s my own fault for not being able to have a child. But Catherine, she has a son, doesn’t she? You know how it is—the entire Lee fortune is at stake. They want to get Catherine’s boy adopted under my and Lemuel’s names so that, eventually, all the family wealth ends up with us.”
Sally couldn't stand Catherine—never had, never would. She didn’t care for Catherine’s kid either. But for the sake of the Lee fortune, she’d grit her teeth and let Catherine come back into the family.
“Adelina, you’ve got to help me with this. Don’t worry—once Catherine comes back to us, she’s part of our family, and her marriage will be up to us to decide. I won’t let her run after Lance again, that’s for sure.”
If she didn’t still have a use for Adelina, Sally would never have bothered to patch things up with her.
Adelina, for her part, was already turning over other ideas in her mind. Still, she managed a tight smile. “Of course, Sally. If there’s anything you need from me, just say so.”
“Good. So here’s the deal: figure out a way to bring Catherine’s child to me. Once I have that baby, there’s no way Catherine won’t come back to us.”
Sally linked arms with Adelina. “You know, the reason you never married Lance was Catherine. The morning of your wedding, Lance was at the hospital—by Catherine’s side. He stayed there for a whole month! Can you believe that?”
Shock widened Adelina’s eyes. “What did you just say?”
She’d thought the only reason Lance wasn’t at the wedding was because Belinda saw that medical report and called it all off. Now she realized—even if Belinda hadn’t canceled, Lance never would’ve shown up! Why did Lance care so much about Catherine? And her child? Unless…
Unless Harrell had lied to her!
“I’ll let you know what I find out. Lance isn’t here, so I’ll head off first,” Adelina said quickly.
She spun on her heel and hurried out of the ballroom, intent on finding Harrell at the hospital.
To her surprise, she spotted him right outside the hotel entrance, standing under a pillar in a charcoal suit, talking on his phone. When he noticed Adelina, his gaze instantly cooled. He ended his call and strode toward the ballroom.
