Catherine had been thinking about whether she should ask Gavin for help. Now, she didn’t have to wonder anymore. That option was gone.
All morning, she was lost in her thoughts, her face drawn and tense.
“Catherine.”
Letty came over with some files, her eyes bright with curiosity. “Do you know why Shirley got fired?”
Catherine pulled herself out of her daze and shook her head. “No idea.”
“Shirley’s telling everyone in our department group chat that you convinced Lance to fire her. She’s also saying you’re trying to come between Lance and Adelina, like you’re out to break them up.”
Letty rolled her eyes. She obviously didn’t buy any of it. She’d even argued with Shirley in the chat, but since Shirley was the admin, she kicked Letty right out.
“But everyone else in there is on Shirley’s side. They believe her and now they’re spreading rumors all over the place.”
Ever since word got out that Lance and Adelina’s engagement was canceled, people at work were looking at Catherine differently. It was worse lately. No matter where she went, she felt everyone’s eyes on her, sizing her up, whispering behind her back.
So Shirley was stirring up trouble again, just like always.
“I heard you’re thinking about quitting. Is it because of all this gossip?”
Letty took her hand, her voice soft and worried. “You really don’t have to. Once you start dating or get married, all these rumors will just fade away. This job is such a good opportunity…”
Dating? Marriage?
Catherine had never even let herself think about that.
But when Letty said the rumors would just fade away, something in her heart shifted.
“My resignation isn’t that simple. I haven’t decided anything yet. If I do leave, I’ll let you know before anyone else.”
Letty looked even more anxious. “But what will I do if you leave? Catherine, can’t you stay? Please?”
She sounded like a little kid. Catherine couldn’t help but smile helplessly. “Alright, alright. I’m not leaving… for now.”
She didn’t promise she’d stay forever. Just for now.
They were at work, so Letty let it go, but Catherine could tell she was already plotting ways to convince her to stay.
As long as she was at her desk, Catherine kept herself busy.
