The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 57

Gavin was out, and without him, there was no way to cover the penalty for breaking her contract. Catherine was stuck.

Every emotion played out across her delicate face. She never could hide what she was feeling.

Lance stood nearby, his jawline sharp and tense. He pressed his tongue against his cheek, looking calm on the surface, but Catherine could sense the storm just beneath.

“You must be worried about Gavin,” Lance said, his voice steady. “Why don’t you go visit him at the hospital, for SilverLeaf Industries? Go now, and be back before the eleven o'clock meeting.”

That’s when it hit her. Gavin had already met Lance. The recording she’d heard last night… it was their conversation.

Lance watched her, hands in his pockets, standing tall and a little intimidating. “Is something wrong, Catherine? You don’t want to go?”

She couldn’t read him. Did he really want her to visit, or was this just another mind game?

Catherine stared at the floor for a few seconds, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll go now.”

She grabbed her coat and bag, then walked out without looking back.

Lance’s eyes lingered on her as she left, a flicker of emotion crossing his face before he turned away, lips pressed tight.

Catherine stopped to pick up some health supplements on her way. By the time she reached the hospital, it was already ten.

She found Gavin’s room just as he was getting an IV. The door was half open, so she pushed it and stepped inside, her heels clicking sharply on the floor.

Gavin lounged on the bed in a blue and white hospital gown, one hand behind his head, his legs crossed, eyes closed as he soaked up the morning sun.

“Get out! I don’t want to see anyone! There’s nothing wrong with me. Lance just made a big deal out of nothing and dumped me here…”

Catherine couldn’t help a twitch of a smile. She glanced at the medical chart by his bed. It read: Alcohol Rehab.

He’d caused such a scene, everyone probably thought his stomach had burst or something. All this drama, and for what? Just to embarrass himself.

“Gavin,” she called softly, setting the supplements by his bed.
