Catherine’s eyes went wide, and she stood rooted to the spot, completely stunned.
Lance’s brow quirked upward as he regarded her.
“What on earth are you talking about?” Catherine tried to sound defiant but couldn’t quite muster it.
“Am I making things up? You know the truth better than anyone.” Lance’s eyes narrowed as he studied the child in his arms. The boy’s features were beginning to mirror his own with terrifying clarity, and Catherine felt a cold jolt of panic seize her heart.
When had he found out? Who’d let it slip?
“There are security cameras in the living room,” Lance said, his voice low and precise. “And you said it yourself, remember?”
Catherine followed his eyes to the upper right corner, where a 360-degree camera blinked its red light. In a flash, it all came back—she really had just announced to the Lees that Lanny was Lance’s child.
“I only said that to get a reaction out of them. Are you telling me you believed it too?” Gathering some of her composure, Catherine strode across the room and pried Lanny out of Lance’s arms with more force than was strictly necessary. “Keep your distance from my son.”
Lance’s arms were abruptly empty. Before he could look up, a pale yellow bib tumbled from Lanny to the floor. He caught it deftly. Catherine, already hugging Lanny close, retreated to the other side of the room, putting as much space between herself and Lance as she could.
So he only heard what was on the recording—he can’t possibly know for sure, she reassured herself. Still, just in case, I’d better keep Lanny away from him from now on.
Nearly two months old now, Lanny was filling out fast, changing from a wrinkly little newborn into a chubby, fair-skinned bundle with a sweetness his father lacked. But the resemblance—the sharp features, the unmistakable line of his jaw—was right there for anyone to see. Catherine wondered uneasily if, as Lanny grew and his baby fat faded, that resemblance would only become more obvious.
One year of this marriage contract felt far too long; she couldn’t afford to wait. The plan was simple: take care of Geoffrey, ensure Lee Group passed to Davis, and with Davis on Lance’s side there was no way the company would fall to the Ingrams. That would resolve Lance’s crisis, and then she could file for divorce early—Lance would have no grounds to object.
Just as these thoughts ran through her mind, her phone chimed with a message from Aaron:
【The Lee family is searching for Amanda. She’s gone into hiding.】
Catherine responded instantly:
【Keep a close watch. The moment they move on Amanda, intervene immediately—once we have them in the act, the evidence is irrefutable.】
Aaron replied,
【It’s complicated. Amanda spends every day at the casino. There’s an underground casino in Eldervale that controls the whole operation—our people can barely get inside.】
