The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 613

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

Catherine knew he was fully awake and had definitely heard her question.

Lance's eyes snapped open again. "You're wide awake this early. Are you hoping for another round of medication?" he asked, his voice rough with morning gravel.

Catherine's expression stiffened before totally crumbling in flustered defeat. She immediately scrambled out of bed, practically fleeing into the bathroom to wash up before hurrying downstairs.

Lanny had been a bit fussy the previous night, and perhaps the exhaustion of taking care of him had finally caught up to Lance. For the first time ever, he hadn't woken up early.

Catherine finished her breakfast, but there was still no sign of Lance or the baby coming downstairs.

"Ma'am, was the little guy fussy last night?"

Susan asked as she cleared the plates. "Did Mr. James take care of him?"

Catherine nodded. "Yeah."

"I never expected him to be so good with babies. He's been asking me questions about childcare for the past two days."

Susan beamed, carrying the dishes into the kitchen and chatting as she washed them. "Even when he was little, I always knew he was a caring boy. One time I sprained my ankle and was stuck in bed for a few days. He came to my room in the middle of the night, every single night, just to bring me water."

"He grew up to be a man of few words, and he hides his feelings more now, but I know he carries so much in his heart."

Did he really carry so much in his heart?

Catherine forced a strained smile.

Susan had helped raise Lance, so of course she held a special place in his life.

The James family was his blood; they naturally mattered to him.

But Catherine? She had been his wife for two whole years.

And yet, she had never truly mattered to him at all.

"Ma'am, now that you and Mr. James are married again, you two should just focus on being happy. His grandparents are absolutely desperate to hold a great-grandson. If they knew you gave the family such a healthy, beautiful boy, they'd be over the moon!"

Susan was absolutely thrilled for the elders.

Catherine had no idea what Lance had told the nanny. Instead of responding, she just offered a polite smile.
