Even though Ella wanted nothing more than to stay by David’s side, worry twisting inside her, she knew she had to walk away. If she stayed, it would only hurt him more.
She turned to leave.
“Ella, don’t go.”
David pushed back the covers and got out of bed, his movements shaky but determined. He caught her from behind, pulling her into his arms.
He pressed his face into her hair, his voice rough from emotion. “Ella, please… don’t leave. Stay with me. Please.”
Ella’s own heart clenched with pain. She wanted to stay, but she forced herself to speak. “David, let go. If you keep holding me like this, it’ll only hurt you more.”
David just tightened his grip. “Then let it hurt. I don’t care. I just want you here, Ella. Don’t leave me.”
But in the next breath, a sharp pain hit him, so strong his vision faded. He crumpled, his body giving out.
Ella caught him before he hit the floor. “David!”
…
When David woke up again, night had already fallen. Moss and Joanna were sitting beside his bed, watching over him.
“David, you’re awake?” Joanna asked, relief flooding her voice.
They both hurried to help him sit up.
David glanced around, searching the room. Ella wasn’t there. “Where’s Ella? Did she leave?”
Moss hesitated. “Ella, she…”
“Is she trying to leave with Lola? No, I have to find her.”
David tried to get out of bed again, but Joanna moved quickly, blocking his way. “Ella hasn’t gone anywhere. She’s just next door.”
Ella froze, her heart pounding. She could hear David’s voice. He was looking for her.
A moment later, a soft knock sounded at her door. David’s voice drifted through, low and rough. “Ella? Are you there?”
Her whole body tensed. She rushed to the door, her hand reaching for the knob.
But then she stopped, remembering the poison that lingered in his body. To him, she was like a slow-acting toxin.
She couldn’t risk it.
Ella took her hand off the doorknob. “David, I’m here.”
He stood outside. She was just on the other side. Only a thin door separated them.
Hearing her voice, David finally relaxed a little. He let out a shaky breath and a faint smile appeared. “Ella, when I couldn’t find you, I thought you’d left. I thought you’d taken Lola and left me behind.”
