Jessa glanced at Moss and Joanna, her eyes shining. “Mom, Dad, I really love the Raphael Crown. Can you put it on me now?”

She could barely hide her excitement.

Joanna picked up the crown, holding it up for everyone to see. “Today, we’re going to place this special princess crown on Ms. Wade herself.”

Jessa nudged her mom, impatient. “Come on, Mom, hurry up.”

She was practically bouncing on the spot.

Joanna, still holding the Raphael Crown, walked over to Jessa and stopped right in front of her.

Jessa’s whole face lit up. Her mom was finally here.

The crowd started whispering. “She is about to give Ms. Wade the Raphael Crown.”

“Well, it makes sense. Ms. Wade is their real daughter.”

“There’s no way a stepdaughter could compare to their own flesh and blood.”

Jessa stood a little taller, soaking it all in. She looked at Joanna, proud as ever. “Mom, put it on me already.”

She bent down a little, waiting for her mom to crown her.

But Joanna didn’t move. Instead, she said softly, “Jessa, this Raphael Crown isn’t for you.”

Jessa froze, not sure she heard right. “What are you talking about, Mom? If it’s not for me, then who gets it?”

Joanna’s eyes were firm. “It is for Ella.”

Jessa felt her heart drop. “Mom, you can’t be serious…”

Joanna met her gaze. “Jessa, you’ll always be our daughter. But we can’t keep letting you go down the wrong road. You wanted us to choose between you and Ella. Your dad and I have made our choice.”

A sense of dread washed over Jessa. “Who did you choose?”

Moss’s voice was steady and deep. “We choose Ella.”

Ella nodded, her cheeks wet. “Okay.”

Joanna lifted the sparkling Raphael Crown and gently set it on Ella’s head.

With her hair swept up and her delicate features framed by the crown, Ella seemed to glow with a new kind of beauty. She looked so dazzling, people could hardly look away.
