Three years ago, Frank was quite friendly to her. Back then, everyone around Jace seemed to like her too.
Now, everything was different. Frank glared at her, full of resentment, and there was a new girl, Hanna, by his side. Lilly had never seen her before. Hanna hovered near Jason, fussing over him in a way that made it obvious she took care of him.
Lilly fidgeted, curling her fingers tightly. She had no idea what to say.
Frank turned to Jason. “Come on, Jason. Didn’t we plan dinner tonight? Hanna’s already got everything ready. We’re starving and just waiting on you.”
Hanna looked over at Lilly. “Lilly, do you want to come?”
Lilly barely had time to open her mouth before Frank cut her off. “Lilly’s got other plans. Let’s go, Jason.”
He was all but dragging Jason away.
Jason glanced at Lilly. “Let me give you a ride home first.”
Lilly could feel Frank’s cold stare. They were hungry, waiting on Jason, and it was clear she wasn’t wanted. She quickly shook her head. “No, really, it’s fine. I have a driver. You guys go ahead.”
Frank pulled at Jason’s arm. “Jason, let’s go. Lilly doesn’t need you to look after her.”
Jason hesitated, then nodded. “Alright, I’ll get going then.”
Lilly forced a small smile. “Okay.”
Jason, Frank, and Hanna piled into a sleek car and sped away.
Lilly stood there, alone on the curb, watching until the car disappeared down the street. She felt the distance between her and Jason like never before. Three years had left a canyon between them.
She didn’t know what had happened to him in all that time, didn’t know how he got the scars on his face. She had no idea what happened to the woman who was with him three years ago, or who Hanna was now.
He felt so far away from her.
But whether it was three years ago or now, he always had someone else by his side.
She was the only one left standing, still waiting.
Lilly’s eyes stung, turning red as she fought back tears. The pain in her chest almost overwhelmed her.
Lucas watched her carefully. “Lilly, are you upset because of him?”
She looked up at him, voice trembling. “Lucas, you had Jason investigated. Don’t you know who he really is?”
Lucas clenched his fists. He knew. He’d had people look into Jason, and the answer had shocked him. Jason was Jace.
Jace had survived everything—acid, a car crash that sent him off a cliff. Somehow, he hadn’t died.
And now he was back, living as Jason.
