Lilly gripped her phone, fighting back tears. She didn’t want to break up with Jason, but she needed to save him. She couldn’t let him spend his whole life trapped in the shadows. She wished, more than anything, that one day he could step out and feel the sun on his face for real.
Growing up with the Monaghan name had been a curse. He’d lost his father early and spent his life branded as the son of a drug dealer., and he’d carried that weight his whole life. After his mother died, he nearly died himself, falling from a cliff. Darkness seemed to follow him wherever he went.
But now, as Jason, he’d fought so hard to find the light. He was so close. All he needed was one more step.
She wanted him to finally live in that sunlight.
Taking a shaky breath, Lilly pressed the phone to her ear. “Jason, we’re done. You need to handle your own life now. That’s it. I’m hanging up.”
She moved to end the call.
Jason’s voice came through, angry and hurt. “Lilly, come outside.”
“I’m not coming,” she answered.
“If you really want to break up, you owe it to me to say it to my face. What’s the point of doing this on the phone? I’m downstairs. Come down.”
“Jason, I’ve said everything I need to say. There’s nothing more between us.”
“I’m not leaving, Lilly. I’ll wait for you downstairs all night if I have to.”
“Suit yourself.”
She hung up and set the phone aside, then walked over to the window. Jason was still there, his fancy car parked at the curb. He didn’t leave, just stood next to it, waiting.
He was really waiting for her.
