Frank walked up to Jason. “Jason.”
Hanna came out just then, her voice surprised. “Jason, what are you doing here?”
Jason looked at her, his tone soft. “You’ve been outside for a while. I got worried, so I came to check on you.”
Frank grinned, nudging Hanna. “See, Hanna? Jason’s worried about you.”
Hanna felt her cheeks warm up, a flutter in her chest. “Frank, stop teasing. Jason, let’s head back.”
“Alright.”
Jason walked with Hanna and Frank, his face unreadable as they passed Lilly. He didn’t even glance at her.
Lilly stood there alone, frozen. She and Jason were now strangers who knew each other better than anyone else. That thought made her heart ache.
She leaned against the wall, trying to hold back her tears. Her vision blurred, and despite her best efforts, hot tears escaped and tracked down her cheeks.
Losing Jason hurt more than she ever thought possible.
When Lilly got home, she crawled right into bed. Lately, ever since she got pregnant, she felt sleepy all the time.
The next day, as planned, she went to Roger’s university and finished all the paperwork. She was finally going to start her new classes soon.
Then her phone rang. It was Victoria, her voice weak through the phone. “Hey, Lilly. I’m not feeling well.”
Lilly shot up in bed. “What happened? Where does it hurt? Did you see a doctor?”
“I have a fever. It’s really high. I’m just resting in my dorm.”
Victoria worked at a top-secret research base with doctors on staff, but that kind of fever still made Lilly’s heart pound with worry. What if it got worse?
Victoria was almost never sick, but when she was, it always hit her hard.
“Nobody’s there to take care of you?” Lilly’s voice was anxious. “Wait for me. I’m coming right now.”
“Okay. I’ll tell the guard to let you in.”
