The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 384

Chapter 384

“I was just passing through.” He was holding something in his hands. A bag, I realized. From a kids’ store. I recognized the logo immediately.

“What’s that?” I asked.

He held the bag out. “See for yourself.”

I didn’t take the bag right away. Colt took it instead, obviously to Gideon’s chagrin, who curled his lip at the Beta before releasing the handles. Colt looked inside the bag, confirming it wasn’t a venomous snake or something, then furrowed his brow and handed it to me.

Curious by now, I took the bag and peered inside. To my shock, there were multiple toys inside; a stuffed wolf, a couple of those DIY airplane kits with the millions of tiny pieces that would definitely get lost and stepped on with bare feet at some point, and even a new pair of sneakers. The expensive kind with the logo, no less. And in Bjorn’s exact size.

I frowned, looking up at Gideon. “What’s all this about?”

“It’s for Bjorn.” Gideon smiled faintly, although there was something tight to his face that hadn’t been there the last time I had seen him. Like he was holding back from saying something. “I’d like you to give it to him for me.

“No, thanks.” I handed the bag back without hesitation. “I don’t think this is appropriate.”

“What? Why not?” Gideon didn’t take the bag. He looked at it, then at me with a lifted brow.

“Because he’s not your son,” I bit out.

The words made Gideon flinch. I nearly did, too, but I restrained myself. On the inside, though, my wolf was screaming at me to tell him the truth. To stop this.

I ignored her. Because it was safer this way.

Gideon’s face hardened. “So I can’t even give the kid a present?”

“Nope.” I dropped the bag on the ground between us, then went to shove past him.

Before I could get very far, Gideon’s hand caught my wrist, pulling me back. Colt snarled as Gideon turned me to face him, although I held up my free hand, silently indicating for him to back down. He did.

“What do you want?” I whispered.

Gideon’s hand tightened around me. “I want you to tell me the truth.”

“I have told you the truth.”

“Oh?” Gideon lifted my arm, waving my hand in my face. “Then why aren’t you wearing a wedding ring, Avery?”

My eyes darted to my ring finger, which was indeed empty. I never wore the ring except when I knew I was going to run into Gideon. Otherwise it felt too heavy, too wrong. I didn’t like wearing that costume all day.

For a moment, I wasn’t sure what to say. My throat bobbed as I struggled to come up with a response, and all the while, Gideon stared at me, waiting for me to slip up.

I wouldn’t let him see it.

“I’m working,” I said, yanking my arm away even though it hurt my skin to do so. “I can’t wear a ring in the clinic:”

Gideon shot me a disbelieving look, but he didn’t have a chance to say anything else, if there was even anything else to say. Colt stepped forward, snarling and muttering something to Gideon that I couldn’t hear, although I was sure it was somewhere along the lines of “Get out, or else.”

Gideon glared at me for a moment longer. Then, he turned and strode out of the infirmary, forcefully opening the door so that it slammed into the wall.
