Chapter 440

Gideon’s POV
It took a few hours, but Tegan finally found Deirdre. She’d been hiding out in Fiona’s pack like we wouldn’t think to look there. Or maybe she was just tired of running and gave in.
Either way, Tegan found her hastily packing her things in Alpha Matthew’s home. The moment Tegan showed up at Matthew’s door, claiming that Fiona was in custody because of her, Matthew didn’t hesitate. He handed her over, suitcase and all, right along with the box of his late wife’s jewelry that she thought she could sneak away with.
Now, here she was. For the first time in ten years, I finally got to see Deirdre being brought to justice. It was a sweeter sight than I ever could have imagined.
She walked between Tegan and one of my pack warriors with her wrists bound and her head up, dark hair pulled back, wearing yesterday’s clothes and moving like she had simply decided to come along of her own accord. Like she was doing us a favor. It was such a Deirdre thing to do that I almost laughed.
Almost.
Tegan brought her to a stop in front of me on the gravel path and shoved her to her knees before stepping back. A few pack members had drifted over, drawn by the noise and the cars, and were watching from a distance. I didn’t send them away. I wanted an audience for this, because I knew it
would humiliate her.
Deirdre looked up at me.
Ten years had passed since I last saw her face, and she had done considerable work to change it. The nose was different, the chin, the shape around the eyes. Even her freckles were artificial, I realized upon closer inspection.
But the eyes were exactly the same. She may have tried to hide the color with dark brown contacts, but the shape was exactly the way it had been ten years ago. Sharp and hollow inside, like looking into the dead eyes of a doll.
I had looked into those eyes too many times over too many years to mistake them last night. I supposed Deirdre hadn’t accounted for that. Well, she was certainly accounting for it now.
“Gideon,” she said. Her voice was surprisingly steady for a woman with her wrists tied behind her back. Before you say anything, I would like a chance to explain myself.”
I didn’t really feel like giving her that chance. But despite everything, the packs still followed a basic law. Innocent before proven guilty. Every wolf had the right to a trial.
“Go on,” I said, waiting.
Deirdre glanced at the people watching from the edges of the path, then back at me. She had clearly hoped for something more private. I didn’t move to give it to her.

“Everything I did,” she said carefully, “I did because I loved you. That was the only reason. I know it caused harm. I know what it looks like from the outside. But I genuinely believed that if I could just get you to choose me, you would eventually-”
“Love you back?” I said.
She held my gaze. “Yes.”
Love.
Once, I had truly thought I loved Deirdre. That was before I knew just how much of a liar she was. She’d pretended to be my mate-beyond that, she had done everything in her power to ensure that I never realized it was Avery all along.
She had worked with the rogue king, the man who destroyed everything, all in her pursuit of power.
This had nothing to do with love. It never did. For Deirdre, it was only ever about getting her way.
“You never loved me,” I muttered. “You only ever loved yourself.”
Deirdre’s jaw tightened. “You have no idea what I gave up for you,” she said. “I did love you. I do love you.”
