“You can say that to me if you want, but if Adelaide overhears, she’s definitely going to set you straight.” Nanette frowned at his stubbornness. It was just an offhand joke the adults made when they were kids, but here he was, still holding onto it after all these years.
“And don’t forget, Petty is your sister-in-law now.”
“She’s about to divorce Franco. Pretty soon, she’ll be single,” Owen replied, glancing down and fiddling with his watch.
Nanette narrowed her eyes, her tone carrying a hint of warning. “Oh, is that so?”
“Even if she’s single, even if she wanted to be with you, I still wouldn’t approve. You need someone who can actually help your career, someone who can support you. Petty’s great, and she’s beautiful, but she doesn’t have a family or any connections. She can’t help you.”
The elevator doors slid open on the first floor.
Owen held the door and looked sideways at his mother, a little smirk tugging at his lips. “Petty will be mine. And so will the White Family. When that happens, I won’t need some wife to boost my career. Having Petty will be enough for me.”
Someone else walked toward the elevator. Nanette quickly composed herself, her face calm as ever, and stepped out with her usual poise.
Owen waited until he saw Nanette get in her car and drive away before he turned to his assistant. “Let our guy know to wipe everything clean. Don’t let Franco find anything that leads back to us.”
He was just about to get into his own car when he caught someone getting out of a car nearby.
Owen paused, watching with mild curiosity.
The nanny helped Laura out of the car and settled her comfortably in a wheelchair. Owen smiled, half amused. “You’re working so hard. If people didn’t know better, they’d think you were Franco’s wife.”
Laura looked up at him with calm, steady eyes and motioned for her nanny to wheel her away.
Owen strode forward, blocking their path with ease. “I heard Franco and Petty are headed for divorce. Doesn’t that make you feel anything?”
“Laura?” The nanny looked at him with suspicion.
