The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 104

The fever hit her because her body just couldn’t handle the freezing cold. Once the fever broke, the little scratches and bruises hardly mattered.

“You got back just in time.”

A woman stepped out of the house, dressed stylishly and carrying herself with a kind of quiet grace. The only thing out of place was the apron tied around her waist.

“Nanette?” Petty blinked in surprise. It had been ages since she’d seen Nanette at home, not since she moved out of The White Estate.

Nanette walked up and slipped her arm under Adelaide’s, steadying her. “I made some soup. You and Petty should have a bowl while it’s hot.”

Adelaide smiled at her. “That’s so thoughtful of you.”

Then she turned to Petty. “Ever since I started feeling a little under the weather, Nanette’s been coming back every few days to make me soup and spoil me with good food. She’s so caring. That’s more than I can say for your second uncle, who only knows how to travel abroad and have fun.”

“Mom, come on, don’t say that. I’m just doing what any daughter should.” Petty gave her a gentle nudge. “Let’s go inside.”

They settled at the dining table. Nanette handed Petty a steaming bowl of soup. “Thank you, Nanette.”

Petty took a sip, savoring the rich, fragrant taste. She let her eyes flutter closed for a second. “This is amazing. You haven’t lost your touch at all.”

“If you like it, have some more. Your mom’s been saying you should stay here for a few days to rest up. I was thinking the same thing, so I’ll stick around and take care of you both for a bit.”

Petty gave her a grateful smile and nodded.

Nanette reached out, smoothing a strand of Petty’s hair behind her ear, her eyes soft and warm. “When you smile, you really do look just like your mother.”

Petty just kept sipping her soup quietly, feeling her throat tighten.

Later that night, she was about to go to sleep when a message from Aaron popped up on her phone.
