Just before getting out of the car, Petty held onto her seatbelt and turned to the man sitting next to her. He had that calm, quietly elegant vibe that always made her feel at ease. “Harris, thanks for everything these past couple of days.”
Harris’s hands tightened a little on the steering wheel. “I wanted to be there for you. You don’t have to thank me.”
His words said more than he let on.
Of course Petty understood what he meant. She’d known for a while how he felt about her, but since he never brought it up, she never knew how to respond.
Now, though, it felt like the right time.
“There are some things I have to say, or I’d feel like I was being unfair to you. You know how I am. I can’t keep this stuff bottled up.”
Harris looked at her, already guessing what she wanted to say, but he let her speak anyway. “Go ahead. I’m listening.”
Petty took a breath. “I went through a really bad marriage, and it’s made me kind of… wary of relationships. I just don’t want to get involved in that stuff again. Not now, at least.”
Harris was quiet for a long moment. Then he reached over and unbuckled her seatbelt for her, his tone soft. “I’m not asking you to accept me right now. Even if you never do, that’s okay. Don’t feel forced. I’ll still be here. I’m still Harris.”
She hadn’t expected Harris to be so stubborn about this.
Then again, she used to be just as stubborn herself.
Petty had said what she needed to say. She knew from experience that you couldn’t talk a stubborn person out of anything. If you could, she wouldn’t have ended up so hurt by Franco.
After saying goodbye to Harris, she headed inside the TV station building.
Watching her walk away, Harris took out his phone and made a call.
On the other end, a middle-aged man answered, his voice low and steady. “I can team up with the Green family to put pressure on Franco, but you need to promise me you’ll resign from the hospital soon and come back to help me.”
Harris looked down at his hands, the hands that had spent years holding a scalpel. He had to help Petty get out of her marriage, to finally break things off with Franco.
He replied calmly, “Alright.”
