The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 144

After work the next day, Petty slipped on her hidden recording gear and drove straight to Night, the most glamorous club in Cabinda.

Just a few days ago, the news department had gotten an anonymous tip. Someone said Night was covering up some shady business, but they were too scared of revenge to go to the police.

Night had a staff of hundreds, and people came and went so quickly it was hard to keep track. With shifts changing all the time, no one noticed when Petty put on a uniform and slipped in with the rest.

The first floor was the bar. Petty had been here before with her colleagues. All of them were sharp journalists, but even they hadn’t picked up on anything strange down here. Anyway, if there was something illegal going on, it definitely wouldn’t be out in the open on the first floor.

If that anonymous letter was telling the truth, then the real secrets had to be upstairs, hidden away in the private rooms.

Pushing a cart loaded with drinks, Petty took the elevator. The manager had given her instructions over the walkie-talkie earlier, so she pressed the button for the seventh floor. There were cameras in the elevator, but with her mask on, Petty wasn’t worried about anyone recognizing her.

The elevator opened on seven. Petty pushed her cart out. Compared to the chaos of the first floor and the loud music drifting up from the second and third, this floor was almost eerily quiet. Only a handful of people lingered in the hallway.

Her destination was the private room at the end of the hall. The farther she went, the fewer people she saw. Her heartbeat picked up, nerves creeping in.

When she’d changed earlier, she’d hidden a tiny recorder in her buttons and tucked a camera into the bun at the back of her head. Usually, going undercover meant risking getting thrown out, maybe yelled at or threatened. But this time, with a criminal operation possibly involved, she had to be extra careful.

She knew it was dangerous. Still, this was her job. She couldn’t back down.
