Petty woke up in the middle of the night, blinking against the soft light above her. The first thing she saw was Hans sitting quietly by her bed, looking tired but alert, as if he hadn’t moved all night.
“Hans…” Her voice was barely more than a whisper. Why are you here instead of resting?
Before she could say more, Hans cut her off with a crooked smile. “Still on the lookout for a man?”
She stared at him, totally lost. “What?”
Hans reached out and gently touched her forehead. “You’re back to normal now. But when you first got to the hospital and started coming to, the meds were still hitting you hard. You were about to be taken in for a stomach pump and, out of nowhere, you asked the doctor to find you a man. I almost lost it. I seriously thought about taping your mouth shut.”
Petty flushed and glanced away. Everything from then was a blur. Of course she couldn’t remember that.
But she did have a faint memory of the car, right before everything went black. She could almost hear Franco’s voice telling the driver to get her to the hospital.
“Did Franco bring me here?” Her throat was dry and her words sounded rough.
If nothing had gone wrong, Franco should be in custody now. In the car, she had been so focused on keeping him away, fighting to stay awake and push back against whatever they’d given her, she hadn’t even thought about what might have happened to him after.
“It wasn’t him. It was one of his bodyguards,” Hans explained. “Malcom was the first to get you out, but Franco stopped him. Franco didn’t actually bring you to the hospital himself because he got held up by the police before he could.”
Hans pulled the blankets up around her shoulders. “Stop worrying about everyone else. For now, just rest. You can’t drink anything yet, so try to sleep a little and get your strength back.”
Petty stared at the ceiling, mind spinning. Once she came back to herself a little, she turned her head. “I can’t sleep with you here.”
Hans let out a soft laugh. “Just close your eyes. That’s all it takes.” He even reached over, pretending he might cover her lids for her, as if to force her to sleep peacefully.
Petty shifted away from his hand. “I’m afraid you’ll spring a leak. Go rest. Let Aaron stay with me.”
