The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 32

Petty stopped short, one foot already inside the elevator. She reached out and pressed the button to keep the doors open. The panels slid apart again. She tightened her grip on her fingers, trying to steady herself, refusing to turn around and demand answers from Laura.

The doors began to close. Petty stared at her own reflection in the shiny elevator wall. Her face looked pale and drawn. She let go of her clenched fist and noticed fresh blood welling up from the scrape on her palm, the one she’d gotten from slipping last night.

She thought she was ready to face Laura, that she could keep her cool. But she’d never expected Franco to be the one bringing Laura back. Franco couldn’t even wait for the divorce to go through. He wanted Laura home right now.

Clearly, Franco didn’t care about their marriage. He didn’t care about her, his wife. Their marriage wasn’t just cold and distant—it barely even existed to him.

That thought made Petty’s chest feel tight, like she couldn’t get a full breath.

After leaving the hospital, Petty went back to the TV station. She threw herself into her work, but every time she had a moment to herself, Laura’s words from lunch kept echoing in her mind.

Work finally ended. Petty called Nash again. This time, he actually picked up.

When Petty got to the hospital, Nash was just finishing his medication. He looked up when she knocked, then smiled and waved her in. “Petty, you’re here. Come in.”

She walked to his bedside. “Professor, are you feeling any better?”

“It’s just a cold. I’m already much better. Sit down.”

Petty sat on the sofa by his bed and waited while he finished his medicine.

Nash coughed a couple of times. Then he looked at her and said, “I heard you put Hassan in the hospital.”

Petty’s breath caught. Hassan was Laura’s brother, and Nash’s nephew too.
