The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 33

Nash was a heavyweight in the news world. Everyone respected him, and honestly, more than a few big shots at the news agency used to be his students. If Nash said the word, Petty’s problem would be solved—just like that.

She glanced at the streaks of gray threading through his hair and felt a pang of guilt. “Nash, I really do know I messed up,” she said quietly.

Even her classmates used to say Nash doted on Petty more than anyone else.

A flash of emotion crossed his face. He pushed his glasses up and let out a sigh. “If you go overseas, that’s three years. Three whole years apart from Franco. Are you really okay with that? Or is it because Laura’s back and it’s messing with things between you and Franco?”

Relationship. The word stung. Petty almost wanted to laugh. What relationship? She and Franco had nothing left, not even the easy friendship they once shared.

She forced a smile. “Nash, I came by today just to talk about work.”

She knew how to keep her boundaries. No matter how much Nash cared about her as his student, Laura was still his niece. He was caught in the middle, and she didn’t want to drag him into her personal mess.

Nash noticed her tact, the way she still knew how to read a room. That used to be what he liked most about her, and it made his feelings turn even more complicated. After a moment, he finally said what was really weighing on him.

“Everell is a war zone right now. It’s dangerous, you know that. The people signing up for this aren’t just trying to pad their resumes. They’re willing to risk everything because they believe in what they’re doing. I can’t send you somewhere like that. You’re my student.”

So that was it. Petty realized she’d been wrong to think he was still upset about what happened four years ago. Now, she felt even worse.

But she wasn’t ready to back down.

“Nash, I remember the first lecture you ever gave us. You said that in our job, wherever there’s truth that needs to be told, that’s where we go.” Petty’s gaze was steady and sure.

“I’m not afraid of dying.”
