The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 373

He never could have guessed that, after he lost his sight, someone would take an aerial shot of the crescent-shaped lake and publish it in a magazine. And her—she’d forgotten everything by then—still found her eyes drawn to that same lake, all over again.

But the feeling of holding her close was gone in a blink, the dream shattered, falling away like pieces of broken glass.

Franco’s eyes snapped open. The first thing he saw was Petty, crouched right by the cabin door. Her hand was so close to the handle that Franco’s mind flashed back to last year, to her pulling open the balcony doors, about to jump.

His breath clenched in his chest. Without thinking, he yanked her back toward him, pulling her into his arms. Her eyes, red from drinking, locked with his. His voice came out rough, strained tight with panic. “What the hell are you doing?”

Petty jumped at the sheer force of his reaction. She noticed how his hand shook, gripping her arm so hard it almost hurt. Only then did it click—he thought she’d been about to throw herself out the door.

She rolled her eyes inwardly. Why would she ever do something like that? There was no way. Still, she didn’t bother to explain, not right now.

She asked, “Weren’t we supposed to leave the island tomorrow? What’s with the early exit?”

Franco didn’t look away, scanning her for even a hint of something off. The moment he was sure she wasn’t about to do anything drastic, the tension eased in his hands. His voice was almost back to normal, only a little rough around the edges. “Didn’t you want to get out of here? I’m taking you back sooner. Is that supposed to make you mad or happy?”

Petty was sure he had his reasons for changing the plans. But even if she asked, he wasn’t the type to tell her. It didn’t really matter. What mattered was that she was finally going back to Cabinda.

She rubbed her temples, feeling the buzz in her head. “What did you even give me to drink?”

Franco smirked. “Don’t blame the booze because you can’t hold your liquor.” He took her by the arm, steering her to the sofa until she flopped down.
