The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 86

“I dropped my glasses.”

Franco’s voice came out rough and tired.

After he spoke, Petty caught the sound of him stifling two coughs.

She frowned, glancing around.

Night had swallowed the whole mountain forest, but the snow in the valley caught just enough light for her to see vague outlines. It wasn’t total darkness, but it was close.

Her eyes slowly adjusted. That’s when she noticed for sure—Franco’s glasses were gone from his face.

Years ago, a car accident had taken Franco’s sight. Even after his vision came back, his eyes were left with lingering problems. He’d had trouble focusing ever since, something like astigmatism, so he always needed glasses. No one knew if his eyes would ever go back to normal.

Now, without his glasses and in this near-blackness, Franco was basically blind again.

His hair was a mess from their tumble down the cliff. A few strands hung over his forehead as he tilted his head, like he was trying to sense anything at all.

Seeing him like this brought Petty right back to those years when he couldn’t see at all.

She fought down the rush of old emotions, managing only a quiet “Oh” as she let go of his hand and pushed herself to her feet.

The second she stood, Franco caught her wrist. He couldn’t see, so he grabbed for her blindly, his long fingers sliding between hers.

As soon as Petty tried to pull away, his grip tightened, locking her hand in his.

He coughed again, voice rougher than before.

“It’s safer if you stay close.”

Petty suddenly raised her hand in front of his face.

“How many fingers am I holding up?”

Franco frowned. His voice was low. “What?”

“Exactly. You can’t even see I’m holding up two fingers. Tell me again how staying with you is supposed to be safe for me?”

She pulled her hand free with a sharp tug.

Wrapping his oversized coat tighter around herself, she muttered, “Thanks for the jacket, by the way.”
