I rapped my knuckles against Kael’s door, expecting it to swing open with his usual alertness and that

halfcocked grin he reserved for mornings he thought he was too clever.

It didn’t.

I waited a beat. Then another. Just as I raised my hand to knock again, the door cracked openand Kael

appeared, flushed and rumpled, shirtless with a pair of sweats hastily slung around his hips. His hair was a

tousled mess like someone had been gripping it, and his chest still glistened faintly with sweat.

I arched a brow. Sleeping late today?

He opened his mouth, then closed it. Iuhjustlost track of time.

Hmm.” I wasn’t expecting a real answer, and I didn’t need one.

I need you to head down to the-

A noise cut me off. Movement inside his quarters. Somethingsomeoneshifting in the bed.

I froze. And then I saw it: the edge of a tattooed shoulder disappearing beneath Kael’s sheets. A glimpse of auburn hair. A flash of gold against dark skin.

My brain caught up two seconds too late.

The man Nevara said Kael had been flirting with.

Oh.

Oh.

My mouth openedprobably to say something, maybe nothing at allbut Kael’s ears flushed red and he stepped forward instinctively, as if to block my line of sight.

I cleared my throat and looked away. Right. Never mind. Justtake your time. Get dressed. Meet me in

my office when you’re ready.

Kael nodded stiffly, not saying a word. Maybe he couldn’t.

And me? I turned, walked away, and did my best to pretend I hadn’t just walked in on that.

I made it halfway down the hall before the heat crept into my neck.

Gods, I hadn’t even done anything and I felt like I needed to throw myself off a balcony just to atone for

walking in at the wrong time.

By the time I stepped into my office and closed the door behind me, I was practically scowling at the air.

Not at Kael. Not even at the man in his bed. Justthe awkwardness of it all.

Nevara was already there, leaning against my desk like she owned it, holding a glass of juice from the

kitchen like she didn’t care it was my desk and my juice.

She raised a brow. You look like someone told you your mother’s coming to visit.

I dropped into my chair and sighed. Worse.

Oh no.She leaned forward, eyes gleaming with interest. What happened?

I dragged a hand down my face. I think I just interrupted Kaelwith the man you saw him flirting with last

night.

Her eyes widened, lips parting in a delighted gasp. Oh my God. They slept together?

I didn’t ask,” I said quickly. Didn’t want to know. It was none of my business, and it’s none of yours either

-so don’t you dare say anything.

Thoren, come on-

I’m serious,I cut in, pointing at her. If I hear even one word come out of your mouth resembling gossip-

A knock interrupted me. The door cracked open, and Kael stepped inclean, dressed, composedand far

earlier than I expected.

My brows lifted. That was fast. I didn’t expect you so soon.

I should not have been in bed still,Kael said, standing tall with a little too much formality in his spine. You needed me. My duties come first.

You’re allowed to have a social life, Kael,” Nevara said lightly, swirling her juice. You’re not a monk.

Still,” he said, jaw tight. My duty to my king comes first.

Well, now I have to ask-she leaned against the edge of my desk like a damn cat, eyes gleaming- was he good? Did you give or receive? Or bothdid you switch?

Nevara!I barked, eyes wide. That is quite enough! Kael doesn’t walk in here asking you how you take it!

Kael looked like he was either going to die or bolt.

I jabbed a finger toward the door. Allow the man his privacy. Now go do something productive.”

She groaned dramatically and stood up. Fine, fine. For the record, though? If he did ask, I’d answer. Enthusiastically.

Out!I barked again, flinging a pen in her general direction.

She winked at Kael on her way out and disappeared with a laugh trailing behind her.

The door clicked shut.

I looked back at Kael and grimaced. Sorry. She’strying to be all up in your business.

Kael let out a slow breath, the faintest twitch of a smile at the comer of his mouth. It’s fine. I’ve seen

worse.
