Rhys was lying in the hospital room upstairs. He didn't even know how much longer he could keep his own life, waiting desperately every single day for a piece of good news.
If she was pregnant at a time like this.
If he knew he might not live to see his second child born...
This was absolutely not good news.
Clara's breathing spiraled out of control. It felt as though all the air had been violently sucked from her lungs, the suffocation making her sway on her feet.
She couldn't even believe it herself.
"No... that's impossible..." Clara's voice trembled terribly. "It's impossible. I can't be right now... I can't..."
Seeing her on the verge of a total breakdown, Emily immediately pulled her into a tight hug. "Don't panic. Don't scare yourself. It might really just be because you've been so exhausted lately. Don't be scared, let's just go get a blood test first."

Clara had no idea how she managed to get through Emily's NT screening.
There was a tiny silhouette of life on that ultrasound printout.
Looking at it, Emily's eyes welled with tears.
Clara mechanically helped hold Emily's coat, mechanically listened to the doctor list out pregnancy precautions, and mechanically walked out the door.
By the time she snapped out of her daze, Emily had already dragged her into the emergency room of the OB-GYN Department.
While waiting to get her blood drawn, Clara's mind was a complete chaotic mess.
The needle pierced her vein, and blood flowed through the tube into the vial. Clara stared at that vial of blood, her heart hammering so hard it threatened to crack her ribs.
The expedited blood test results came back quickly.
In the consultation room, the doctor looked at the numbers on the computer screen and said, "You're pregnant. Based on the numbers, you're about six weeks along. However, you're slightly anemic, and your progesterone is low. Have you not been resting well lately? Are you under a lot of stress?"
Clara: "..."
She stared at the string of numbers on the lab report, completely deaf to any other sound in the room.
Six weeks.
