He ripped the medical tape off the back of his hand, his brow furrowed in a tight knot.
Clara had cried.
She cried downstairs while accompanying Emily for her check-up, and then she came back and pretended nothing had happened right in front of him.
Was there a problem with Emily's baby?
If there was, Emily would have called Daniel in tears ages ago.
The only things capable of making Clara wear an expression like that had to involve either him or Felix.
Felix was perfectly fine at kindergarten, so who exactly was the problem?
A sharp stab of pain echoed through Rhys's chest.
He waited a moment for it to pass, then dialed Daniel's number.
The phone rang twice before it was answered.
"Hello? What's up?"
Rhys skipped the pleasantries and cut straight to the chase. "Emily came in for her check-up today, and Clara went with her. When they came back to the room just now, Clara had been crying, and Emily was covering for her. When you get home, test the waters with Emily for me."
There was a one-second pause on the other end of the line.
"What do you suspect?"
"I don't know."
Rhys sighed, feeling like a useless cripple.
Lying in this hospital bed, he couldn't even figure out why his own wife was crying.
"Did a doctor pull Clara aside today to tell her something about my condition, or... did something happen to her?"
Daniel replied over the phone, "Understood. Leave it to me. Don't let your imagination run wild and mess up your mood."
"Yeah."
Hanging up the phone, Rhys stared at the ceiling and draped his arm over his eyes.
That indescribable sensation of weightlessness tightly gripped him once again.
At seven o'clock that evening, Daniel finished a full day in court and pushed open his front door.
Emily was curled up on the sofa. The TV was on, playing some random variety show at a low volume. She was hugging a throw pillow, resting her chin on it, staring blankly into space.
Her face practically had "I'm hiding something" written all over it.
Daniel loosened his tie and sat down in the armchair.
