Using Emily's leverage, Clara stood up and looked at her.

"Help me keep this a secret."

Emily froze. "Why? If Rhys finds out you're pregnant, he might be so overjoyed that it actually helps his recovery. With something like this to look forward to, he'll fight even harder to live!"

"And then what?" Clara offered a bitter smile. "What if he doesn't recover?"

She lowered her eyes, her gaze falling to her stomach. "He already blames himself so much. From the moment I came back, he's spent every single day drowning in guilt over the past ten years. He didn't even dare bring up getting remarried. What do you think will go through his head if he finds out I'm pregnant right now?"

Emily fell silent.

Knowing Rhys's personality, his greatest fear was dragging her down. He would only think that this baby would end up growing up without a father, making him feel even more indebted to Clara.

No matter how strong his will to live was, it would be utterly crushed by an infinitely magnified wave of regret during those late nights when he couldn't breathe.

"At the very least, he can't know right now." Clara tore the lab report into shreds. "I'll hide it for as long as I possibly can. Emily, please."

Emily's eyes grew hot again, and she nodded, biting her lip. "Okay, I swear I won't tell him. But until then, you have to take good care of yourself."

Clara murmured an agreement. She dug a compact powder out of her purse and carefully dabbed it under her eyes.

The face in the mirror still carried a faint trace of redness at the corners of the eyes. She pressed the powder in meticulously until she looked like she simply hadn't slept enough, hiding any other signs of distress.

By the time she returned to the hospital room with Emily, it was almost noon.

Clara pushed the door open, immediately locking eyes with Rhys, who was sitting up in bed.

He looked much better today. Dr. Black had mentioned that he could be discharged after two more days of observation.

Hearing the sound, Rhys pulled his gaze away from the window.

"Why did you guys take so long?"
