In the bathroom early the next morning, the shower was running at full blast.
Clara hadn't felt much before, but—whether it was purely psychological or not—ever since getting that lab report yesterday, she felt waves of nausea constantly surging into her throat.
She dry-heaved several times, but since she hadn't eaten anything since yesterday afternoon, there was nothing to throw up.
Turning off the faucet, she scooped up a handful of cold water and splashed it on her face. Her swollen nerves gained a brief moment of clarity.
She straightened up, took a towel, and carefully dabbed her face dry before looking up at the mirror.
The woman staring back had dark, unhideable circles under her eyes, her face as pale as a sheet of paper. Clara grabbed her concealer and layered it on to cover her exhaustion, finally swiping on a bit of lipstick to bring some color back to her complexion.
She couldn't afford to show any cracks.
After dropping Felix off at kindergarten, Clara parked her car in the surface lot near Brighton City General Hospital. Just as she was about to go buy some fruit, the phone in her bag started buzzing.
It was Daniel.
Clara answered, "Hello, Mr. Reed. Do you need something this early in the morning?"
"I'm at the tea room next to the hospital. Come over here for a second."
Clara's heart skipped a beat.
If Daniel was asking to see her alone right now, there was only one possibility.
"I need to get to the hospital to stay with..."
"Clara," Daniel cut her off ruthlessly, "I canceled on my morning clients to sit here. I am not calling to coordinate schedules with you. I'm waiting in the private room on the second floor."
Hanging up, Clara sat perfectly still in her car for a full minute.
A few minutes later, holding a bag of fruit, Clara pushed open the door to the private room on the second floor of The Gilded Leaf Tea Room.
There was no tea in front of Daniel, only a pitcher of lemon water and two clean glasses.
Clara sighed inwardly.
Emily really couldn't keep a secret from Daniel.
