"That's absolute bullshit!"
Simon spat a curse, violently kicking the hallway wall.
The man never believed he had any inherent worth; he only saw himself as valuable when he could be utilized.
How could someone like that exist?
Simon was more terrified than anyone that Rhys would actually die in that room.
He had clearly seen how the light in Clara's eyes had died out, and how, after finally accepting Rhys again, that spark had slowly flickered back to life.
If that light went out again, Simon wasn't sure if anyone could ever reignite it.
The three elders couldn't hold back anymore, covering their mouths as they wept uncontrollably.
Only Clara remained silent.
She sat frozen on the bench, staring blankly with the letter in her hands.
Her breathing slowed, her eyes wide and unblinking until they ached with dryness, her tears forcefully suppressed.
Daniel was intimately familiar with how people instinctively reacted in the face of death, and Clara's current state deeply unsettled him.
He closed the document, slid it back into the folder, and offered it to her with both hands.
"From a legal standpoint, this will provides an absolutely flawless guarantee. He left you everything he could give, everything he couldn't, and all his remaining value after death. You can rest assured on that front."
"But as his attorney, and as your friend... Clara, you don't have to hold it in."
To Daniel, there was a strict line between his professional duties and personal friendships. Crossing it meant blurred stances, compromised judgment, and a loss of professionalism.
But tonight, in this hallway, at this very moment,
As a friend who had watched them torment and ultimately save one another,
He permitted himself to cross that line just this once.
"Crying here won't make anyone think you're weak. You need to release this emotion. Bottling it up is dangerous for both you and the baby."
For a moment, the only sounds were the muffled sobs of Mia and Clara's mom.
After a long silence, Clara finally looked up, her gaze refocusing on Daniel as she harshly wiped the tear tracks from her face with the back of her hand.
"Thank you for making the trip, Mr. Reed. Making you come all the way out here in the middle of the night to read this... absolute garbage."
