The sound of the bedroom door opening broke the quiet. Anne poked her little head inside, calling out softly, "Mommy."
Not seeing her mother right away, the little girl looked confused until she heard her father's voice. "We're out here," Max called out.
Anne quickly ran out toward the balcony. "Daddy, Mommy!" She threw herself into Felicia's arms, her large, bright eyes gazing up with deep concern. "Mommy, does it still hurt?"
Felicia gently stroked Anne's small head, her voice soft and soothing. "Mommy is perfectly fine now."
Max had made sure Anne never witnessed Felicia's severe breakdowns. He only allowed the little girl into the room to keep her company after Felicia had been given a sedative and had fallen into a deep sleep.
Still, the clever kid could sense that something was different about her mother.
Anne wrapped her arms tightly around Felicia's waist, resting her face against her stomach. "I will always stay with Mommy."
Felicia smiled faintly, her fingers gently combing through her daughter's soft hair.
Later that afternoon, Max took Anne out to the lawn to fly a kite. Felicia sat on a bench by the lake, quietly watching them play.
"Mommy, Mommy, look! The kite is flying so high!" Anne jumped up and down in excitement.
Felicia looked up at the kite soaring into the vast, azure sky. Puffy white clouds drifted idly by in a sky that looked like a painted canvas. When she eventually lowered her gaze, she unexpectedly caught Max looking at her.
Holding the kite reel, Max walked over and took a seat beside her on the bench. He offered her the reel. "Can you hold this?"
Felicia looked at the handle. She lifted her hand to test her strength, finding that she had recovered much more energy than she possessed around noon. Knowing full well what condition she was in, she also knew she needed to regain her strength as quickly as possible.
She reached out and took the reel, though she couldn't grip it with full force.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind jerked the kite violently. Her weak grip faltered, and she nearly let go. Before the reel could slip, a large, warm hand closed tightly over hers, giving her the strength needed to steady the handle.
Felicia stiffened at the sudden contact.
