Tatiana's expression darkened. "Look at Felicia! Does she even act like a mother? When has she ever considered your family's well-being? You two are completely incompatible. If this continues, the only one who gets hurt is Anne. It is better to just be honest with her now."
Max stared at his mother, his gaze piercing.
Tatiana turned away, sitting back down on the sofa and staring out the window, her breathing heavy with frustration.
Max ignored her argument, simply stating, "Do not say things to Anne that she doesn't need to hear."
Anne came out of the bathroom, freshly changed.
Max stepped forward, lifting her onto the bed. "Get some good rest tonight. Daddy will come see you first thing in the morning."
Anne nodded. "Hurry back, Daddy. Mommy is still waiting for you."
Max stroked her hair and hummed softly, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Goodnight, baby."
He took the elevator down to the ground floor.
At this late hour, the hospital lobby was eerily quiet and cold. Felicia sat motionless on a bench, her eyes lowered, completely silent.
Max spotted her instantly. Under the harsh hospital lights, her solitary figure looked fragile. He walked over to her.
It wasn't until his leather shoes appeared in her line of sight that Felicia registered his presence. She looked up, their eyes meeting.
Max took the seat next to her, stretching one long leg out as he leaned back. They sat together on the bench, two striking figures in the desolate, cavernous lobby.
Felicia turned to look at him, noting the exhaustion he couldn't quite conceal. "Is Anne asleep?"
"She just drifted off," Max replied softly.
Felicia slowly averted her gaze.
"What were you thinking about just now?" he asked, breaking the silence.
