Clutching a handful of tokens, Felicia declared, "Let's try a different machine, Anne. This one is rigged."

"Okay!" Anne chirped.

They moved to another claw machine.

Felicia dropped a token in, focused intently, and missed again. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Max watching her with relaxed amusement. She gripped the joystick tighter and tried again.

By the time she was down to her last two tries, her initial fighting spirit had completely fizzled out. She was ready to throw in the towel.

But then Anne offered her unwavering support. "Even if Mommy doesn't win anything, she is still the best!"

Hearing those words, Felicia felt completely unworthy of the praise.

Max patted Anne's head. "If you keep hyping her up like that, she is going to get too arrogant."

Anne looked up at him defensively. "It doesn't matter if Mommy is arrogant!"

Max chuckled and ruffled her hair again.

He stepped forward, positioning himself just behind Felicia, and dropped three tokens into the slot. He reached around her, his large hand completely covering hers on the joystick.

"You..."

"Pay attention to the angle," Max murmured, cutting her off.

The claw descended. Felicia could only let his hand guide hers as he masterfully manipulated the joystick. He was practically leaning his entire weight against her back. Enveloped by his large frame, the intoxicating, distinct scent of his cologne filled her senses.

The metal prongs stopped directly over a toy and dropped down perfectly. The plushie was lifted into the air and dropped cleanly into the prize chute.

Felicia bent down and pulled out a small star-shaped plushie.

"Mommy is the best!" Anne cheered enthusiastically.

Felicia smiled, pinching the little girl's cheek. "You have such a sweet mouth."

Anne grinned brightly, showing off her little white teeth.

"You have one more try," Max reminded her softly.
