Felicia gently stroked the top of Anne's head.
"Mommy, why is your neck all red?" Anne suddenly asked.
Felicia instinctively touched her neck. When she changed her clothes earlier, she had noticed marks covering her entire body. She scrambled for an excuse. "I got bitten by a mosquito."
"Oh," Anne replied. "Are there mosquitoes where Mommy sleeps?"
"Mhm. A very big mosquito," Felicia answered. As she spoke, she inadvertently caught Max's dark, amused gaze fixed on her.
Max took Anne's hand and added smoothly, "Daddy got bitten by a mosquito yesterday, too."
Felicia shot him an exasperated glare.
Catching her fiery look, the corner of Max's lips twitched upward.
Anne turned to her father, blinking suspiciously. "Are there really that many mosquitoes? I didn't get bitten at all."
Max patted her head. "If any mosquito dared to bite you, Daddy would deal with it immediately."
"But Daddy isn't always with me. If a mosquito bites me, you wouldn't even know," Anne pointed out reasonably.
"Daddy will always be the first to know," Max stated.
Oblivious to the double meaning in his words, Anne simply nodded. "Okay, then!"
Noon arrived quickly.
After eating lunch and resting for a bit, Max looked at Felicia. "How are you feeling?"
Felicia shot him a sideways glance, then averted her eyes. "I am fine now."
Anne looked up in concern. "Is Mommy feeling sick?"
Felicia smiled warmly. "Mommy is perfectly fine, sweetheart. Don't worry."
"Let's take Anne downstairs to play," Max suggested.
The hotel featured an expansive children's entertainment area, so they didn't even need to leave the premises. Since they weren't at home, staying cooped up in the room all afternoon would be boring for the little girl.
Felicia agreed.
