Her sobs gradually weakened until she went completely quiet. In the massive living room, only the sound of her heavy breathing could be heard. Felicia pulled away from his embrace, her voice hoarse and exhausted. "I am tired. I am going to bed."
Max gave a soft hum of agreement. "Get a good night sleep."
Felicia turned and walked back toward the bedroom.
Max remained rooted to the spot, watching her fragile silhouette until she disappeared through the doorway. Retracting his gaze, he strolled over to the sofa and sank heavily into the cushions. A large patch of his dress shirt was soaked with her tears. He stared blankly at the dark television screen, lost in a sea of unspoken thoughts.
Just then, his phone buzzed. Leaning forward, he picked it up from the coffee table, checked the caller ID, and pressed the answer button. "Hello."
He had seen Darin's missed calls earlier but had chosen not to return them. Darin had not reached out again until now. Hearing Max's voice, Darin stayed silent for a long moment before finally asking, "What are you busy with?"
Max ignored the question. "What is it?"
"I heard Anne was hospitalized," Darin said. "Is she doing better now?"
"She is fine," Max replied smoothly. "She was discharged today."
"That is good to hear."
After Darin's words, the line fell back into an uncomfortable silence.
Choosing not to pry any further, Darin finally said, "I will let you go, then."
Just as he was about to hang up, Max suddenly spoke. "I won."
Darin's grip on his phone tightened. "What do you mean by that?"
Max offered no explanation and simply ended the call. On the other end, Darin lowered his phone, his brow furrowing as he stared at the darkened screen.
Max sat in the living room for a little while longer before rising and heading to the bedroom. Felicia was just getting ready to lie down. In the center of the large bed, Anne was already fast asleep, looking incredibly peaceful. Felicia threw Max a brief glance before pulling back the covers, sliding into bed, and nestling close to their daughter.
