Before the words had even faded, the steel whip sliced through the air with a vicious whistle and slammed onto Danielle’s back.
The coarse tip tore through her thin hospital gown and dug into her flesh, sending a wave of soul-tearing pain through her. Danielle’s body jolted violently, and a cold sweat instantly soaked her clothes. She bit down hard on her lip, refusing to let out a single moan. Her back muscles seized uncontrollably, every inch screaming in agony.
Watching her silent endurance only fueled Lorie’s sadistic pleasure. It was as if a dark fire had been lit within her. She swung the whip again and again, striking Danielle’s back, her arms, her legs, leaving a crisscrossing network of bloody welts.
“Beg me! Go on, beg me!” Lorie screamed, her eyes bloodshot. “Beg me to let you go! Beg me to spare Alexander! Just get on your knees and beg me, and I’ll stop!”
Danielle’s consciousness began to fade, the pain drowning her as black spots danced in her vision. But she kept biting her lip, which was now bleeding profusely, and managed to squeeze out two words through her clenched teeth, her voice faint but defiant. “In… your dreams.”
Her defiance completely enraged Lorie. She threw down the whip, stormed over to Danielle, and yanked her up by the hair, forcing her to look up. Lorie stared at the unbroken spirit in Danielle’s eyes, at the stubbornness she despised so much, and the hatred inside her threatened to swallow her whole.
