He took in the scene before him, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. His gaze settled on Lorie as he spoke with mock admiration. “Lorie, you’re even more ruthless than I am.” He clapped his hands slowly, as if appreciating a fine performance. “The Davidson family’s empire, and Alexander himself… you want it all. You have quite an appetite.”
Lorie turned to face him. “What I want has always been more than just this. Everything the Gaylord family lost back then… I’m going to take it all back, piece by piece.”
Harold raised an eyebrow, his tone laced with cynical humor. “And you’re not afraid? Afraid that Alexander will make a comeback one day and seek his revenge? You’ll be doomed.”
Lorie’s gaze shifted to Alexander, a fanatical gleam in her eyes. She laughed. “Doomed? I stopped being afraid of that a long time ago.” She paused, her eyes fixed on Alexander’s pale face. “As long as I can keep him by my side, as long as I can see him belong only to me, I’d gladly go to hell for it. I’m willing to be doomed.”
Alexander’s gaze remained on Danielle, his eyes filled with guilt and anguish. He opened his mouth to speak, but found he couldn’t say a word. He knew this was a deal with the devil, like drinking poison to quench his thirst. But he had no other choice.
Danielle looked at him, tears sliding silently down her cheeks. A corner of her heart seemed to shatter completely. She knew, from the moment Alexander had agreed, that there was no going back for them.
