Nathan watched Danielle quietly. “You used to be so busy all the time. Even after marrying into the Davidson family, you still worked yourself to the bone, always thinking of everyone else.”

“I’m part of this family too now. There’s no reason for you to keep doing things for me.”

A gentle, indulgent smile softened his eyes. “Honestly, I just like seeing you carefree again, the way you were when we were little.”

“If anything is troubling you, come to me. If you’re upset, I’m here. That’s what big brothers are for.”

He paused, his voice tinged with resignation. “But you’ve grown up now, Danielle. You never want to talk to your brother about anything anymore.”

There was a trace of helplessness in his tone.

“Maybe it’s because I disappeared from your life for so many years. I suppose our bond has faded a little.”

Danielle listened quietly, then replied in a gentle voice, “That doesn’t change anything, Nathan. You’ll always be my brother. Our relationship hasn’t changed just because of distance.”

Nathan smiled warmly. “I’m glad you feel that way. If you’re tired, lie down and rest for a while. Don’t feel like you have to keep an eye on me every second.”

“I’m honestly feeling so much better than I did a few days ago.”

Danielle watched him working through a stack of documents, a hint of worry in her eyes.

“You should try not to overdo it. Don’t wear yourself out.”

Nathan nodded in agreement.

Danielle sat down nearby, picked up a paring knife, and started peeling an apple for him.

He worked in silence, while she quietly prepared the fruit—just as she used to when they were younger.

Out of the blue, Nathan spoke again. “You’ve always been reserved by nature. Alex is the same way. The two of you together… there was never much conversation between you.”

No wonder they divorced, he thought. Neither of them knew how to communicate, so nothing ever got resolved.

Danielle’s hand paused for a moment as she peeled the apple.
