Nathan looked up, meeting her eyes. “Mom, I have my reasons for handling things the way I do. If I’d come back and joined The Davidson Group straightaway, it would have been too obvious what I was after.”

“If we tip them off, it might do more harm than good.”

She narrowed her eyes. “And you think joining Vanguard Technologies means Alexander won’t suspect you? He wanted to hand the company over to you as soon as you got back. Why didn’t you take it?”

“Mom.” Nathan closed his laptop and looked at her, his expression serious. “Do you still see him as the naïve kid he used to be?”

“He’s not that innocent little boy anymore. He’s grown up, and he can’t be manipulated so easily.”

“I’ve seen firsthand what he’s capable of. If he hands me The Davidson Group, how can I be sure he’s not setting me up? What if he’s giving me a poisoned chalice? I’m not about to accept anything from the Davidson family until I know exactly what I’m dealing with.”
