The two Grayson bodyguards stepped forward, ready to shield Madeline. Suddenly, a sharp voice rang out from behind them. “Don’t you dare try anything!”
Everyone turned to look. Lucy was rolling up in her wheelchair, her maid pushing her along. She hadn’t visited Noah in days, weighed down by guilt, but today she’d finally worked up the courage. The last thing she expected was to see this chaos.
“What’s all this about? Do you people realize where you are? This is a hospital! Who gave you permission to cause a scene in here?” Lucy glared at the crowd, her anger plain for all to see. This was completely out of line. Couldn’t they see what kind of place this was? There was a child inside, barely holding on, and they were arguing right outside his door.
Madeline let go of Courtney, who looked ready to faint from the pain. Courtney stumbled back, and Bill caught her, steadying her.
Bill’s voice was tight with anger. “Lucy, you saw who started it. She hurt my daughter, and now she’s hurt my wife. How am I supposed to just stand by and let that happen?”
Lucy shot him a hard look. “Bill, do you even know where you’re standing?” She pointed at the hospital room. “You show up here with half the family, shouting at the door of a sick child’s room, and you expect his mother to just take it?”
“She hurt Helene first.”
“I don’t care who started it. That’s no excuse for this kind of behavior. If something happens to the boy because you’re all out here yelling, will you take responsibility?” Lucy’s eyes narrowed, her voice cold. “Whatever problems you have can wait until the child is out of danger.”
Without another word, Lucy motioned for her maid to wheel her right up to the door. Her face was set, her posture unyielding. If anyone wanted to get through, they’d have to get past her first.
Bill and Courtney were furious, their anger almost thick enough to choke the air. It felt like the whole room might explode.
