Madeline always had a way of scheming. Helene couldn’t shake the feeling that Madeline had told the doctor to say those things on purpose, just to make everyone let their guard down.
“Your health comes first. Don’t worry about anything else.” Courtney’s fingers hurt so much she barely got the words out before hurrying off to see a doctor.
Helene couldn’t calm down at all. Her eyes narrowed with suspicion. “Dad, where’s Julian? Why isn’t he at the hospital?”
Bill frowned, looking frustrated. “I really don’t know.”
This felt wrong to Helene. Restlessness twisted in her chest.
After thinking it over, she gritted her teeth. “Dad, I still think something’s not right. We can’t let that kid live. If he survives, everything we’ve done will be wasted.”
Bill shook his head. “I’ll have people keep an eye on things and see how it plays out. Now isn’t the time to make a move. If we get caught, we’re done for.”
Neither of them were on her side, and with her own injuries holding her back, Helene could only vent by slamming her fist against the bed in frustration.
...
At the same time, in the Grayson family living room.
Julian sat in the main seat, sharp suit flawless, his face cold as stone. His dark eyes were like ancient glaciers, so cold they seemed to freeze the air around him.
Across from him, a middle-aged man called Charlie sat on the edge of an armchair, visibly uneasy. You could tell he was used to being in charge, but Julian’s silence had him on edge.
Julian had him brought here half an hour ago and hadn’t spoken a single word. He didn’t even look up, just kept working through paperwork as if the other man didn’t exist.
The silence dragged on so long, it felt endless. The man had no clue what Julian was planning, and the uncertainty left him anxious and irritated. Finally, he couldn’t stand it anymore.
