Madeline’s birthday party went ahead as planned. It was a big deal, with way too many details to handle, but honestly, all Madeline did was pay for it. Casey took care of everything else with his team.
She sat there, staring at the DNA test report in her hands, her heart thudding uncomfortably.
One day, Helene showed up at her door. The moment Madeline opened it and saw her standing there, her whole mood shifted. She went cold.
“Can we talk?” Helene said, tilting her chin up, her eyes fixed on Madeline.
At the café, Madeline pulled out a chair and sat down. She watched as Helene limped over, moving slow and awkward thanks to a leg wound that clearly hadn’t healed. She must have checked herself out of the hospital too soon.
Madeline looked away, her voice cool and even. “So, what do you want?”
Helene clenched her hands in her lap, her jaw tight. “Do you know where Julian is?”
Madeline couldn’t help it. She almost laughed.
“He’s your fiancé. You’re asking me where he is?”
Helene’s face darkened at the edge in Madeline’s voice. “I can’t find him anywhere, that’s why I’m here asking you.”
“Sorry, I have no idea,” Madeline replied.
Helene glared at her, holding in her frustration as she stared at Madeline’s flawless face. For a second, Helene just sat there, feeling pathetic. She actually had to come to Madeline to find Julian. Sometimes she wondered what exactly she was missing, compared to Madeline.
