Oliver had heard everything that day when his parents were fighting. He knew his dad didn't trust his mom, and that it had broken her heart.
Now his dad was about to get engaged to that awful woman. So what if they just left with Mom? Who needed that mean dad anyway? They would be fine without him.
Noah, though, watched Madeline with a worried frown. “Mom, is there really no way you and Dad could ever be together again?”
His biggest dream had always been simple. He just wanted to live with both his mom and dad, to have a family that was happy.
But the way his mom spoke now made it sound like they would never have that.
Madeline’s heart twisted for her boys. She reached out and gently pinched Noah’s cheek, then glanced at Oliver sitting quietly beside him.
She couldn’t help but blame herself. As their mom, she felt like she’d failed. She couldn’t give them the whole, happy family they deserved.
“Noah, do you wish your dad and I could both be here for you?”
Noah nodded, his eyes searching her face, like he was scared he was asking for too much.
Madeline’s guilt only grew. If she could, she would give them all the happiness in the world. But she and Julian were done. There was no fixing it.
“I’m sorry, Noah. I’m sorry, Oliver. Your dad and I really can’t be together anymore…” Madeline’s eyes dropped to the floor, a flash of pain slipping through. “But I promise, I’ll love you both twice as much. I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”
…
Helene limped after Julian, struggling with every step. Her leg still ached, but he didn’t care. Julian just walked ahead, fast, never once looking back.
She finally caught up, out of breath. “Julian, I…”
Julian’s voice was ice. “I’m not going to marry you.”
Helene froze, her face going rigid. She couldn’t say a word for a long moment. Then she forced herself to smile and tried to sound calm. “Why? Julian, I really love you. Remember, we even had a child together…”
