Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 387

The room went silent and Helene froze. She felt like she’d just turned to stone.

Wait… what?

Did he really just say that?

Did he just tell her she was in the way?

She stood there, hand still out, waiting for a gift that clearly wasn’t for her.

James didn’t even look at her. He just walked straight past and headed for Madeline.

It took Helene a second to snap out of her shock. When she finally turned around, she saw James stopping in front of Madeline, a gentle smile on his face.

“Happy birthday, Madeline,” he said softly.

His voice wasn’t loud, but because the whole room had gone quiet, everyone heard him.

Helene’s eyes went wide.

Now everyone was staring.

James reached out, holding the gift toward Madeline.

Madeline looked like she hadn’t expected to see James either. She kept her voice low as she said, “I thought you said you were too busy to come.”

“I wanted to surprise you,” James replied, raising his eyebrows. “Come on, take your gift. If you don’t, I’ll just be standing here like this. Awkward, right?”

They weren’t talking loudly, but in the silent room, their words carried.

Even Helene could hear every word.

A ripple of surprise moved through the guests.

James had come for Madeline’s birthday? He’d gone out of his way to surprise her, and now he was standing there hoping she’d accept his gift?

What was going on?

James and Madeline clearly knew each other. And the way he looked at her was different from how he looked at anyone else.

He said happy birthday.

So Madeline wasn’t lying. She really was having her birthday party here.

Just as the shock was settling in, someone in the crowd suddenly laughed.
